Telstra Trades Assist was designed to provide administration and production support for busy tradespeople and small businesses. Earlier iterations were described as too technical for the intended users, creating a need for a more intuitive experience.
The design challenge
The app needed to fit into a working day with limited time for learning software. Essential resources had to be easy to recognise and access, with a clear relationship between the home screen and the tasks users came to complete.
Scope
My contribution covered visual design, UI and UX. The project centred on high-frequency tasks, simpler information and actions, and reusable patterns for delivery.
The earlier app experience was too technical for the people it was intended to support. Frequently accessed resources also needed greater prominence. These two observations set the direction for the redesign.
Frequency and urgency
Busy tradespeople need tools that fit around their work. Bringing frequently used resources to the home screen makes the starting point reflect recurring tasks, instead of requiring people to interpret the product’s internal structure.
Reducing technical friction
The design response focused on simpler information and clearer actions. The aim was to make essential workflows understandable without assuming familiarity with technical terminology or requiring users to learn the app before it became useful.
From insight to hierarchy
High-frequency tasks shaped the home screen. Reusable patterns and clear states carried that directness through the rest of the experience, keeping the interface focused on practical actions.

05 / PROJECT DETAIL
The redesign put frequently used resources on the home screen and organised the experience around quick, practical actions. The aim was to support the customer’s work without requiring technical knowledge of the app.
A more direct workflow
High-frequency tasks shaped the hierarchy. Simpler information and clearer actions reduced the amount users needed to interpret before continuing with a task.
Delivery
Clear states and reusable patterns supported implementation and gave the product a foundation for extending its trade services. The central principle was to preserve the directness of the experience as new functionality was introduced.
The project reported improved customer confidence, app usage and satisfaction following the redesign.
A more approachable working tool
The redesigned home screen brings key resources forward and organises the experience around familiar tasks. This supports the original purpose of Trades Assist: helping tradespeople manage administration alongside their day-to-day work.
Consistency as the product grows
Reusable interface patterns and clear states give the team a foundation for extending trade services while preserving the simplicity of the core workflow.
